Waking Persephone Festival

Waking Persephone is a different kind of dance event experience, with a core focus on education and exploration, creating community while breaking borders. While there are indeed be performing opportunities, the main goal is an intensive series of classes, lectures, and activities featuring both new and established faces in the genres of dark, gothic, steampunk, experimental, theatrical, and ritual dances. Over the course of the event, there are ritual/community gathering, two gala shows, live music performances, workshops, master classes, panel discussions, vending, an afterparty ball, and more.

Welcome to the website for the Waking Persephone Festival- a bellydance fusion event with a focus on education, community, and exploration.

What are you wearing: the amulet symbolism of Belly Dance costuming & adornment

Friday October 16th, 4:30-6:00 PM Room A

Presented by: Zahara Solomon

We will learn the secret language of symbols we wear in Tribal Belly Dance. Why do tribal cultures embrace bells, fringe, mirrors, coins & triangles so much? Why a belt & bra? Why certain colors? And how people communicated with each other by what they were wearing. Participants can bring a piece of jewelry or textile and we will research where it came from, what it was used for & approximate date of creation. I will also bring some books from my library for others to peruse. Everyone get's a handout with resources, coin identification and some of the info covered in the workshop.
