Waking Persephone Festival

The Myth of Persephone

- an ancient tale that embodies the loss of innocence, transformation, love, the cycle of life, the changing of seasons, family dynamics - yet it is still relevant in modern times. In dancing the dark, we explore many of these themes for the audience, while often undergoing them ourselves. Sometimes, we are reviving Persephone, bringing her back into this world, and other times, we mourn her as she journeys to the Underworld.

The Focus:

The next Waking Persephone will take place in Seattle, Washington October 13th-16th, 2016. WP is a different kind of dance event experience, with a core focus on education and exploration, creating community while breaking borders. While there will indeed be performing opportunities, the main goal is an intensive series of classes, lectures, and activities featuring both new and established faces in the genres of dark, gothic, steampunk, experimental, theatrical, and ritual dances.

We invite all those who perform bellydance, especially those with a dark/unusual twist, to share their art at Waking Persephone. There is a vending room for those specializing in dark wares, featuring work by some of the community's best artisans, designers, artists, and merchants. In 2015 we introduced our chillspace/tea room, which was a huge hit.  Also, every year we have a FREE community roundtable. Our evening events are Motif - a Community Gathering on Thursday evening, our Gala Shows featuring our instructor staff, live music, and applied performers and special guests on Friday & Saturday evening, and The Underworld Ball - our Sunday evening afterparty featuring live bands + DJ + more!
